New homes for Denmark Street car park could end fines

February 22, 2010

Problems in a town centre car park could be over in Wokingham if a plan to build houses is included in a masterplan.

The draft town centre masterplan features an L-shaped development of townhouses across the Wokingham Borough Council-owned side of the Denmark Street car park near the library.

Fines up at 'confusing' car park

Drivers who have failed to notice signs pointing out part of the car park is owned by private operator Euro Car Parks and bought tickets in the wrong machine have received £60 fines.

As well as the parking in Denmark Street, Rose Street’s car park is also set to take more housing.

Councillor Keith Baker, executive member for highways and transport, said: “We must still have parking for people to come to the town.

“If we lose a car park, we must look at putting something elsewhere. That might be a multi-storey, for instance.”

He reiterated that the plans are not yet set in stone.

Cllr Baker said: “The masterplan is the result of all the consultation and feedback.

“We put the professional advice on top of that as well. We are getting close to saying this is the plan but it is still a framework rather than the firm decision on housing.”
