February 19, 2010
A 31-year-old woman who has died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning following a leak at a house in Barkham Road in Wokingham has been named as Katie Haines.
Mrs Haines, nee Samuel, died on Thursday evening due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.
Her husband, Richard, whom she had married in December, found her body after returning home from work.
Mr Haines and two other people were taken to Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading to be treated for carbon monoxide poisoning.
A spokeswoman for South Central Ambulance said: "On arrival at the scene, one woman was al-ready in cardiac arrest and sadly died.
"Two other patients in serious condition were taken to hospital. Six members of the public were treated on scene after being assessed by the ambulance specialist team with carbon monoxide read-ing equipment."
The six others are believed to be neighbours.
Tactical Advisor Graeme Few said: “Carbon monoxide poisoning is uncommon however we have responded to three cases in the last week. Although we are equipped to respond to these cases, we urge members of the public that these can be prevented by simple maintenance checks.”
Firefighters from Wokingham Road and Bracknell stations, emergency care practitioners and police were called to the scene at around 8pm on Thursday.
A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said: “As of Friday morning they [the three patients] are getting better but they are grieving as well.”

My children and I were poisoned by Carbon Monoxide (CO) for over a decade. I had never heard of carbon monoxide before then. In July 2005 I set up CO-(Carbon Monoxide) Awareness. We became a registered charity in Sepember 2008. If you know anyone who has been effected by CO please pass on our details. If you would like some information on CO please go to our website: www.covictim.org or call me directly on 07715899296. CO-Awareness is run completely by unpaid volunteers. We can send you copies of our easy to understand information leaflet on request. This can also be download from our website. If you need any advice please don't hesitate to contact us. Please add our national CO-Awareness week to your diary: Monday 15th November. Let's all work together to prevent suffering from this silent killer.
