Rock Choir's album to rock the world

A Wokingham choir has joined the likes of pop superstars Lady Ga Ga and Take That after signing a multi-album record deal.

Wokingham Rock Choir members are among 1,000 voices who have already recorded tracks for an album as part of the four-album deal with record label Universal, which is also home to The Rolling Stones.

The Rock Choir, one of 60 in the south, signed up to the deal, only had its first meeting in September last year at Wokingham Town Hall.

However, it has gone from strength to strength.

The group is made up of singers from all walks of life who gather at St Paul’s School in Oxford Road on Wednesday lunchtimes and Monday nights.

Singer and performer Glen Harvey, who leads Wokingham Rock Choir, said: “We are so thrilled, Rock Choir was only introduced to the area last year and already we have achieved so much.

“The individuals who join tend not to have sung in public before and come along to weekly rehearsals not only to learn how to sing and enjoy the feelgood songs, but to have time out for themselves and be part of something special.

“When I told them we had been offered a record deal they didn’t know whether to cheer or panic.

“I explained they were going to be part of an album that featured the other Rock Choirs in the areas and they all relaxed.

“I never make any members sing alone and they certainly don’t have to get on stage if they don’t want to.

“Rock Choir is all about having fun.”

The Rock Choir concept was launched by Caroline Redman Lusher, from Surrey, in 2005.

The businesswoman and teacher also features on the best-selling album Coming Home by the Soldiers.

Miss Lusher, 35, said: “Being offered a record deal is symbolic of the standard and reputation Rock Choir has grown to in the UK.

“To offer the members the opportunity to experience being on an album that will be released worldwide is extraordinary.”

The first Rock Choir album will be released later this year and feature songs including Can’t Hurry Love, Walking on Broken Glass, Rescue Me and Dancing in the Street.

Tom Lewis, head of A&R for Decca Records, the Universal label releasing the album, said: “Rock Choir is a phenomenon.

“When you hear them sing, it makes you feel fantastic.

“It’s totally infectious. With the recording, we really wanted to somehow bottle up the energy, joy, enthusiasm and vitality of the choir so it could be shared with as many people as possible.

“I hope people around the world will put the CD on, crank up the volume, sing along and feel fantastic.”
