Car fire causes rush hour tailbacks

February 09, 2010

A blazing car caused rush hour tailbacks around Crown Wood and Birch Hill last night.

Firefighters were called to the flaming Ford Focus which caught light near the junction of Opladen Way and Redditch in Crown Wood, as its owner was driving home from work at about 6pm.

Crew manager Rich Sage said: “The driver managed to get out when the fire was still small, I think he was near home.

“When we got there the car was well alight, it took two firefighters with breathing apparatus us-ing water to put the fire out completely.

“The car was badly burnt by the end which makes it hard to say how or where the fire started but it looks as if it started in the engine compartment.”

Opladen Way had to be closed for around 30 minutes while firefighters dealt with the incident.
