Town tops chart for energy bills

February 08, 2010

Big old homes in the borough are making Wokingham one of Berkshire’s least energy-efficient towns.

Energy company E.ON last week said Wokingham was one of Berkshire’s hotspots in terms of electricity and gas consumption, with the average house spending £1,413 a year.

That is £211 a year more than in Thatcham, and £127 more per year on energy than in Reading.

The company estimates an average home in the UK spends £1,208 a year on energy bills.

A spokesman said: “As the weather in Berkshire would not vary greatly from town to town, the main reason for these differences in usage would be house age, house size, number of occupants and behaviours.”

The company is offering advice about staying warm in the winter and information about additional support on its website, www.eonenergy.com.
