Full judgement on John Redwood's expenses

February 04, 2010

In Sir Thomas Legg's report on MP's expenses, the judgement for John Redwood MP reads: “The ACA Review says that in March 2005 you were paid £112 for the cost of re-seeding your lawn, which was not allowable under Green Book rules, and it is recommended that you repay that sum.

John Redwood must repay £112

“In your Grounds of Appeal to me you say that the expenditure was incurred re-seeding worn patches, a form of garden maintenance, and that the Fees Office raised no issue in relation to it. No question has been raised in relation to scarification which was done in the same year.

“I entirely understand why you submitted the claim when you did, but, as was explained to you by a member of the Review Team in her email of 3 November 2009, “the criteria used for the Review are such that only claims for basic garden maintenance are allowable (eg lawn cutting, weeding, pruning shrubs)”.

“I am sure that you would agree that anyone who has to decide what gardening expenses should be borne by public funds has to draw a line somewhere.

“The point at which it has been drawn by the Review for you and for all other Members seems to me to be clear and reasonable.

“It does not imply any lack of integrity on your part, but my Terms of Reference (a copy of which I enclose) only enable me to interfere if I find special reasons in your individual case showing that it would not be fair and equitable to require repayment. I can find no such reasons.

“I would therefore dismiss your appeal.”

Going into politics is basically looking for a refuge for life, fully paid for by the taxpayer with no worries that the vast majority of normal people have to endure. But why should the 83% of people living on less than our MPs salaries/expenses have to pay to support such a fat bellied regime is the big question. The poorer in society suffer but where the politicians have no interest other than themselves. It is a true gravy train that is corrupt and has no real integrity or overidding allegiance to the people they supposingly serve. Dr David Hill World Innovation Foundation Charity
