A coach of stranded families from Wokingham were saved from spending the night in freezing temperatures on Monday night when a hotel stepped up to help.

Wokingham Borough Council’s community resilience team had to find a place to stay for the group of families after they became stranded on a coach journey back from a Christmas trip to Winchester.

The group, who were taking part in the council’s My Family Matters project, were steered to safety at the Hampshire Centre Court Hotel by their coach driver from Horseman Coaches.

The coach had become stuck on the A33 in Hampshire by the heavy snow and were on the coach for seven hours before arriving at the hotel in Chineham.

The group arrived back in Wokingham on Tuesday morning.

Anne Taplin, the council’s senior home school liaison officer, said: “On behalf of the whole team I would like to pay tribute to Graham, our coach driver, for his calm, patient attitude throughout the journey.

“I would also like to say a huge thank you to the hotel staff, for whom nothing was too much trouble.

“All credit to the mums and dads and the children who remained calm and positive through the whole experience.

“Wokingham Borough Council also deserve a mention for their hard work and professionalism in getting things organised.”
