Local Loos scheme opens in Twyford

November 16, 2009

Two Twyford shops are opening their doors to shoppers following the closure of the village’s public toilets as part of a money-saving scheme.

The Local Loos scheme has entered its final phase after the two new partners officially launched the scheme in Twyford last week.

Meanwhile, a campaign to get better disabled facilities for Woodley shoppers has been a success, with the council announcing plans to make new toilets at Woodley Library larger to accommodate people with wheelchairs or mobility aids.

Complaints had been made the toilets at the Oakwood Centre were not large enough for disabled people to use compared to the public toilets.

Wokingham Borough Council announced the Local Loos scheme in this year’s budget to save cash on operating the public toilets in Wokingham and other shopping centres in the borough.

The initiative means the public conveniences at Polehampton Close, Twyford, are no longer available to the public.

However, shops, funded by the council, have signed up to the Local Loos scheme to provide alternative facilities.

The Twyford Local Loos are available at Sebastian’s Café in London Road and Amin’s in London Road.

Councillor Simon Weeks, executive member for the environment, said: “The Local Loos scheme is now running at full strength with no less than 11 different Local Loo partners signed up and operating cleaner, safer and more convenient toilets for residents and visitors.

“These toilets are completely free for people to use – you don’t have to pay any money to access them or purchase anything from any of the Local Loos partners when you use them. We take care of the finances so our residents and visitors are not caught short.”

Brown Bag in Alexandra Court, Wokingham, has also signed up to Local Loos and is operating a disabled toilet.

Good news about the new toilets being built in Woodley library but I don't understand how the Oakwood Centre disabled loos are inadequate when it's a fairly new building. Surely disabled toilets have to be built to meet certain standards - not much point in having specially larger toilets equipped for wheelchair users if the cubicles are not large enough?

I like using the well lit and clean toilets of the businesses who have signed up. Much better than the cold and dark public loos in the library car park previously.
