Lorry ripped open in bridge smash

July 03, 2009

The top of a lorry was ripped off when its careless driver got it stuck under a bridge.

The driver of the self drive box van had tried to get under the railway bridge in Loddon Bridge Road in Woodley at around 6pm last night.

Network Rail spokesman Russell Spink said: “We received reports of a lorry stuck under the bridge.

“Trains continued to cross the bridge at a restricted speed.

“The bridge examined at around 7.30pm, and engineers confirmed there was no structural damage so the speed restrictions were lifted.”

The road near The George pub was closed until 7.30pm while the WVC Self Drive Hire lorry was recovered.

Police spokesman David Paull said: “No-one was injured in the accident.

“The driver has been reported for careless driving.”

I used that bridge everyday at least once, mostly the drivers do realise they are to big before hitting it! but not before causing delays, i do feel this could be better sign posted.

i did pass this one when it had just happened, and he could of got under this bridge had he gone through the middle, Muppet!

What amazes me is "drivers" still don't know the height of the vehicle they are driving.

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at the van rental company when the genius driver called in to report the incident!

The real question is: why, in 2009, do we still have two narrow bridges (one with only one lane and a traffic light) on a major road in Reading???? They should be widened and the road should be dug deeper... But this would make too much sense and would ease the traffic. Not what the Council want obviously or how could they justify "congestion charges"...
