Wokingham is a happy and safe place to live

July 03, 2009

Wokingham is one of the happiest places to live, according to the latest poll.

The borough’s neighbourly feeling, healthy pensioners and feeling safe during the day helped the area secure the accolade after thousands of people had their say on how they rate their quality of life.

The Place Survey, which was sent to 5,000 residents last autumn, found 88 per cent of people are pleased with living in Wokingham - eight per cent higher than the national average.

The national survey, which is carried out every two years, showed Wokingham has the most satisfied residents in Berkshire.

Meanwhile, national figures released last week from the Office for National Statistics on regional trends show the borough’s children have one of the lowest rates of obesity in the country.

The Place Survey asked residents 39 questions, with half focused on local issues, and of these Wokingham scored the highest in Berkshire in 11 categories.

Questions included whether people felt they belonged to their neighbourhood and how often they volunteered.

In all, 86 per cent of people said residents from different backgrounds get on well, while 70 per cent of the 2,200 residents who responded said they thought local public services made the area safer and cleaner.

A whopping 94 per cent of people feel safe in the daytime, 84 per cent of pensioners say their health is good and four out of five people believe the public services treat them with respect.

Two-thirds of residents are happy the area is free of litter and rubbish, while 80 per cent are content with the rubbish collection. More than 70 per cent are satisfied with kerbside recycling, while similar levels of satisfaction with libraries and parks were recorded.

Satisfaction has increased compared to the last survey in 2007, when more than half of people said lack of respect was a problem, compared to 17 per cent this year.
