Football clubs given the boot from pavilions

By Victoria Corbett
June 19, 2009

Football teams are being kicked out of sports pavilions to save thousands of pounds a year on bills.

The cost-cutting measure means some footballers in the borough are having to rethink where their home ground will be next season, while also facing a hike in fees for using facilities.

Wokingham Borough Council says the four pavilions being closed were underused and expensive to run but teams have claimed the figures do not add up.

The council claims the four facilities cost £27,000 of taxpayers’ money in utility bills and basic maintenance.

The Elizabeth Road pavilion along with those at Laurel Park in Lower Earley, Bigshotte Park in Crowthorne and Barkham Recreation Ground will be closed.

This leaves four sites with a total of 12 senior and six junior pitches available for teams to book.

This is absolutely disgusting what on earth is happening with Wokingham borough council . They should be encouraging sport for youngsters in our Borough not making it harder for them. Why in this country are we so lapse in investing in our youth ........
