Log pile 'size of house' catches fire in Finchamspstead

August 22, 2009

A log pile the size of a three-bedroom house in Finchampstead was well ablaze last night as fire fighters had to turn off the power to a number of homes to extinguish the flames.

Crews from Crowthorne and Reading attended the incident in Reading Road at 9.30pm and were there for more than 24 hours dousing the logs.

Steve Hopwood, fire fighter at Whitley Wood fire station in Reading, said: “There were a large pile of logs about the size of a three-bedroom house that were well alight when we arrived.

“The logs were in a yard and were surrounded by more wood and we had to cut off the power cable that was directly above the fire leaving a number of homes without electricity.

“We were there until 2am and other crews were in attendance all night and well into the next day. We do not know how it started at the moment but it is being investigated.”
