A £3,000 civic soiree for Wokingham councillors and dignitaries has been cancelled after it sparked an outraged response from taxpayers.
The Wokingham Times has learned borough mayor Councillor Pauline Helliar-Symons has decided to cancel the party, which was due to be held this month at Arborfield Garrison.
The invitation-only event, which was to be funded by the taxpayer, was to thank borough, parish and town councillors for their work in the borough.

Wokingham MP John Redwood and the Liberal Democrat group decided to boycott the event because they felt it was “inappropriate” given the current financial climate and difficult budget being faced by Wokingham Borough Council.
A poll carried out by getwokingham asking if it was right to hold the soiree had suggested almost half of people thought it was a scandal and those involved should resigned, while five per cent believed councillors and dignitaries did a good job and deserved the bash.
