The car park at Winnersh’s Showcase cinema resembled a scene from the movie Waterworld yesterday as motorists found their vehicles deep in flood water.

Treacherous conditions caused by floods, melted snow and icy roads caused havoc around the area with Arborfield, Burghfield, Theale, Mortimer, Swallowfield, Shinfield, Sindlesham and Winnersh under water.

Motorists faced driving hell and emergency services were kept busy all day.

Many drivers were caught in accidents as they failed to navigate the slippery roads or got trapped.

Some of the most serious flooding was at the Showcase roundabout between the A329M and Winnersh Triangle business park.

Commuters who had left their cars at Loddon Bridge Park & Ride on Tuesday returned to find many of them completely submerged in floodwater.

Several collisions took place during the day, with South Central Ambulance Service confirming 14 incidents of ice-related collisions or falls between 5am and 11am.

In one incident five cars were involved in a rush-hour smash at around 6.30am on the A329(M) at Loddon Bridge.

Police spokesman Adam Fisher said the accident was caused by a condition known as a ‘micro-climate’ where the road would have been colder over the river, causing ice to form in that section of the road.

The collision involved a grey Fiat Punto, a green Ford Focus, a silver Volkswagen Golf, a green Citroen Saxo and an orange Peugeot 207.

The Saxo ended up on its roof, leaving its driver with a minor head injury.

The Peugeot driver also suffered a head injury and was taken to  Royal Berkshire Hospital for stitches.

The incident caused commuter chaos with delays of up to an hour and a half for motorists trying to get to work.
