Let’s cut the jargon says councillor

December 18, 2008

An end to nonsensical jargon and sleep-inducing sentences is on the horizon with a plain English campaign.

Councillor David Lee, leader of Wokingham Borough Council, is leading a mission to rid the council of jargon, gobbledegook and unnecessary acronyms as part of National Plain English Day, which took place on Tuesday.

Cllr Lee said: “Plain English should be the law in all walks of life.

“Too often people talk in acronyms and complicated language just to add an air of secrecy to what they do in a bid to make people like me go away and not bother them.

“I would like to see plain English become the norm in the council.”

Cllr Lee is urging people to send examples of incomprehensible council communications to him in the future.

He added: “It’s going to take a while to get rid of this type of rubbish, but I’m on the case and the council has already made a step in the right direction by simplifying the reports which are written for the executive’s consideration.”

Email your council letters and publications which feature too much jargon to communications@wokingham.gov.uk.
