Knife arch brings new level of safety to town pub

By Hugh Fort
November 21, 2008

Revellers entering a town centre nightspot had to pass through a metal detector as part of a crackdown on knife crime.

Wokingham police spent a night outside the Gig House in The Plaza with the new metal arch searching every person who came into the bar for knives.

The arch is similar to an airport metal detector and goes off if anyone is carrying anything metal.

After that indication, officers were then using a hand-held detector to identify what the items were.

The detector was activated by almost every person who went in to the bar, but it was by items like belts, keys and mobile phones rather than anything more sinister.

Police were pleased with the outcome of the crackdown last Friday and said the operation was as much about making people feel safe as it was catching offenders.

So how many knives or other 'weapons' were found then ?

The fact that this is not mentioned, would unsurprisely suggest that none were found !! Theres a surprise.

Even the copper leading this op stated that there was not a knife problem in Wokingham, so why have they wasted their time proving what they already knew ?? And i seem to recall an American study where certain schools had removed metal detectors from schools where knife crime had not been a problem due to the fact that the detectors gave pupils the impression that their was a problem & trouble/incidents had increased since.
