Questions over free swim cash

November 11, 2008

It is a “crying shame” people aged over 60 will not get free swimming in Wokingham, according to opposition councillors.

Wokingham Liberal Democrats have hit out at a decision by Wokingham Borough Council not to apply for a grant of £39,000 from the Government to cover the costs of free swimming for people over 60 for two years.

The council says it is not prepared to guarantee the free sessions for a couple of years before having to fund the scheme itself, but the Lib Dems say it should have tried to get the grant even if it was only for a short period.

Lib Dem councillor Malcolm Storry asked why the council had given the impression it was keen on the grant and then not applied for it at a meeting of the council on Wednesday.

He was told by council leader Cllr David Lee the plan was too short term to support.

Afterwards, Cllr Storry said: “Even if the council couldn’t afford to continue offering free swimming after that, I think it is a crying shame that our over-60s couldn’t enjoy free swimming.”
