Fireworks night washout

By Alice Murphy
November 05, 2008

A triple whammy of disasters means Wokingham’s fundraising fireworks display will barely break even this year, leaving little cash for charities.

The 20th Wokingham Charity Fireworks Spectacular, which last year raised £25,000, is expecting its donations to be significantly lighter after a catalogue of disasters conspired against Saturday’s event.

The weekend's terrible weather, wrong dates being published for the event and a radio station announcing many fireworks had been cancelled contributed to the low footfall in Cantley Park.

Only about 2,000 revellers made their way to the Twyford Road park for the £10,000 display when normally at least 8,000 turn up.

Alan Rouse, chairman of organiser Windsor Forest Unicorn Club, said there was never any suggestion of cancelling it.

"We won’t have raised much at all, although it is too early to say an exact figure yet,” he told this week's Wokingham Times.

Mr Rouse said the Unicorn Club had a contingency fund left over from profitable years to make sure the charities got a little.

The charities that will benefit from the fireworks include the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust, Wokingham Cancer Trust and Sebastian’s Action Trust.

I'm surprised the event wasn't postponed. For so many this is a family event, and many parents were not willing to walk their children to the event in the down pour, us included.
