Town reacts to credit crunch story

6/10/2008

The town has reacted angrily to a story in a national newspaper describing Wokingham as a boom town which has been destroyed by the credit crunch.

Wokingham MP John Redwood and residents have contacted The Wokingham Times to hit out at the story, saying Wokingham’s problems with empty shops are nothing to do with the credit crunch.

The News of the World story said Toyworld, Stead & Simpson and The Christmas Store had left the town because of the poor financial climate.

However most of the empty shops in Peach Street have been vacant for more than 18 months, long before the credit crunch hit this year.

Read more on this story in this week’s Wokingham Times.

It's the News Of The World. What were you expecting? Facts? Accuracy?

I like the way the story has a picture of Gibbons with a big red "Closed" tag on it and then says it actually moved down the road.

Shops leaving is clearly not to do with the crunch as the vast majority left before it. The uncertainty over the town regeneration is the main reason and the council's stubborn refusal to realise they have cocked up massively has led to a complete lack of belief in any restoration plan.

It's clearly not easy for traders and faced with the added problem of a useless council more concerned with battling much needed houses, no wonder no-one believes in it.
