Convent to close its doors after 100 years

By Hugh Fort

It is the end of an era at a little-known convent in Wokingham which to close after being in the town for more than 100 years.

The Presentation Convent in Easthampstead Road is in the process of selling off its ecclesiastical items and furniture.

The convent, which is next to St Teresa’s School, where its nuns have previously taught, houses the Dominican Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

There are just three sisters left, who still work around the town and teach children at Corpus Christi Church in Sturges Road.

The three nuns, one of whom is now temporarily in a care home after suffering a stroke, will soon move to a two bedroom flat in Sturges Road.

They are hoping they will move to a bigger house in the road if their colleague comes back to work.

The items from the church were auctioned in Lewes, East Sussex, on Monday, September 22, and raised £6,000.

Sister Bernadette Cooney, 75, who has been at the convent for 37 years, said: “We will continue to work around the area, but there is no need for the convent any more.”

   It was inevitable.

You know how much demand there is for a convent in Wokingham?

It will be nice to retain Presentation Convent in Wokingham. Shall we hold a meeting, perhaps after Mass some Sunday, when we can exchange views, strategies for the way forward?
