Fortnightly bin collections are rubbished by Tory councillor

By Victoria Corbett
2/10/2008

Weekly bin collections are here to stay in Wokingham, despite talks about merging waste services with Reading and Bracknell – where rubbish is taken away fortnightly.

Councillor Simon Weeks, executive member for environment at Wokingham Borough Council, told The Wokingham Times last week there are no plans to introduce fortnightly bin collections in the borough.

The confirmation follows a report on the possibility of shared waste collection services in an agenda for the joint waste disposal board, formed of representatives from Bracknell, Wokingham and Reading borough councils.

The board discusses the waste management partnership between the three councils, known as re3, which aims to increase recycling and composting and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

The partnership involves the sharing of civic waste facilities.

Came across this article by chance!! which is great news as Wokingham has one of the best systems of waste removal in the UK. However, I have read, in the National Press, that the EU is passing a directive that all refuse collections are to be fortnightly - how true is this?. I have written to my locsl representative, MsLiz Siggery(twice), and to my MP, Mr John Redwood, but have yet not received a reply!!!! so thanks Cllr weeks for clearing the air on this subject.
