Warning over fake £20 notes in circulation

September 29, 2008

Pubs are being warned to be vigilant against fake £20 notes and a gambling machine scam.

The false notes have been used at Thresher’s wine shop in Broad Street and in town pubs.

Signs have been put up in several watering holes warning staff and drinkers about the bank notes, however pubs are also falling foul of another scam.

Police believe a person is using a device to change the settings on fruit machines   which allows them to use a worthless piece of paper instead of a £10 to operate them.

PC Jo Bromley, of Wokingham police, said: “Last week in a number of venues, unknown males used a note reader on the fruit machines.

“They play £2, then are left £8 up.”

PC Bromley added the £20 note forgeries are not particularly obvious, but the silver strip to the left of the note is a series of dots when held up to the light, rather than a continuous strip as with real notes.
