A new dawn for future of Wokingham town centre

By Victoria Corbett

Traders, townspeople and community groups are to help shape the future of Wokingham’s town centre in a new forum.

Plans to revitalise the town are going back to the drawing board after Peach Place developer Rock Investment Group fell out with Wokingham Borough Council earlier this year following 10 years of negotiations over the project.

And to inform the process of regenerating the town as a whole, rather than just the Peach Place site between Peach Street, Market Place and Rose Street, the council is forming a Town Centre Forum to produce a master plan.

I should imagine Rock is so disgruntled at what has happened it will fight to the bitter end to hang on to the land it owns in Wokingham.

But Rockmartin still own the buildings and the site forming to development site.

Can you press WBC to explain just how they are going to winkle the properties and site out of the hands of Rock.

At least with WBC holding onto the freehold of the Rose St Car Park the council is in a strong position but they should have been in this position from the outset over ten years ago.
