Witness threatened by knife ‘too scared to collect pension’

September 03, 2008

A Winnersh man will be wishing he kept his mouth shut after he was sent to a young offenders institution for intimidating a witness to a burglary he was never charged with.

Dale McCallum, 19, from Mermaid Close, told 60-year-old Valerie Cannon she “better keep her mouth shut” and showed her a knife after she gave evidence about a burglary in Reading Road on April 1 last year.

McCallum was arrested in connection with the burglary but was never charged due to a lack of evidence, Reading Crown Court heard on Tuesday.

The morning after he was released, he saw Mrs Cannon walking to get her pension from the local post office and delivered the warning.

The blade of the knife, thought to be similar to a penknife, was not exposed, but Mrs Cannon was left terrified by the warning and considered not appearing in court.

However, she told a friend who called the police.
