Driver flees scene of evening lamppost smash in front of village pub regulars

21/ 8/2008

A driver who crashed his van  while speeding in Arborfield on Monday night ran away when he realised he was not hurt, writes Alice Murphy.

Drinkers at The Bull pub in Arborfield were disturbed by a loud crash at 8.15pm on Monday. They ran outside to find the van had crashed into a lamppost on the Reading Road side of the roundabout.

Onlooker Steve Bacon said: “I was at The Bull when we heard some noise outside, and went out to find the street lamp on the roundabout had been bent at an alarming angle, and a blue Citroen van was upside down.

“It had roofing ladders strapped to it, which probably saved the driver from injury.

“I went out to see if the driver needed any help, but he simply released his seat belt, clambered out of his window, and crossed the road as if to go to the phone box."
