Garden waste dumping debacle is just a load of rubbish

15/ 8/2008

A Finchampstead man has called for a commonsense approach to recycling after he was turned away from a refuse tip because he drives a pick-up truck.

Frank Vaughan, 46, of Barkham Road, has described the opposition he met when he tried to drop off three bags of garden waste at the refuse tip in Longshot Lane in Bracknell.

Mr Vaughan said that despite the fact his Mitsubishi Warrior contained only three bags of grass cuttings from his own garden, he was told the type of vehicle he drove could have commercial waste, and so it would not be allowed in the tip.

He said: “There are four of us in the family and we have got the truck to transport motorcycles.

“It has got a good purpose to it and it is classed as a car. The tip said I could not take the truck in and I would have to go to Reading."

Grass cuttings to the tip! Oh come ON! You'll be burning leaves you collected with a leaf blower next! With a house and car that size, and enough lawn to fill 3 bags, you have GOT to have room for a composting bin. I've got about a 10m sq garden and I've got one. It takes about two years to fill for me with kitchen waste, leaves, and grass. In my last house I had one and it never filled up, ever. It's like magic. So stop wasting fuel in your stupidly big car by driving grass cuttings to the tip and instead use them as mulch or compost them! It'll save space in your main bin too because you can compost kitchen waste.
