Row erupts over handling of Joel Park decision-making

By Alice Murphy

Furious residents have sparked a war of words over plans to install a teenagers’ play area in a Wokingham park.

Joel Park Residents’ Association turned up en masse at a Wokingham Town Council amenities committee meeting to slam the plans.

A verbal sparring match arose between committee members, councillors and the public during last week's meeting.

Neighbours say the park is a nature reserve well used by all members of the community and have expressed concerned at the plans.

They say if the new play area is built the park may prove a waste of money if teens do not use it but will be a focal point for anti-social behaviour if overused.

An extraordinary meeting to further discuss the plan is set to be held at a date yet to be decided.

- Do you think the town council should abandon its plan? Or shouold neighbours accept that teenagers also have a right to use the park? Get debating by clicking the link below.

I just don't understand what has got into the Town Council. Cllr Linda Barnes used to be very pleased to pleased to take her grandchildren to the playground but now wants to destroy it.

Teenagers rarely go to this park - except for Holt girls sneaking over for a cigarette during the day.

All the park needs is for the old equipment to be updated. It is a family park and needs equipment for children from 0 to 10 years old
