Lilies win Chelsea gold again for Hyde family

June 03, 2008

The Hyde family knows just what it takes to win a gold medal at Chelsea Flower Show.

They only started entering Chelsea four years ago and have recorded gold every year.

They family have also won in excess of 10 further medals at Royal Horticultural Society shows at the NEC Birmingham, Malvern Hills, Hampton Court and London.

The Hydes are lily growers and, to be sure to have a perfect display of around 180 for each show, they grow about 2,000 in preparation.

Lilies naturally flower in May, June and July, depending on the variety, so some had to be held back to perform on Monday, May 19 – judging day.

Liz Hyde, whose main job is growing with W Hyde and Son of New Road, Ruscombe, explained:  “It is a question of heat and light. Light is very important.

“More heat and light brings the flowering on, keeping them cooler and darker holds them back.”

“W Hyde and Sons is very much a family affair.

“Grandfather started growing on the same site – in the Floral Mile alongside Waterers – in 1926.”
