Last Post sounds for town branch

By Alice Murphy
May 21, 2008

The first post office in Wokingham to be hit by nationwide branch closures has served its customers for the last time.

The sub-post office at the Nisa convenience store in Barkham Road shut on Monday despite a six-month fight by regulars to keep it running.

Next month the post office at the Co-op shop in London Road will also close, leaving Wokingham town with only one post office, the general one in Broad Street.

Post office supporters say the closures will affect communities, the elderly and owners of small businesses.

“They [Post Office Ltd] have made a very big mistake shutting not only this but many other post offices," Audrey Kneale, a regular customer at the Barkham Road branch for 32 years, said.

“It’s very sad. It’s a valuable service to lose. The general post office is very busy and there is only one disabled bay outside."
