Preparing for a real emergency

15/ 5/2008

A major incident exercise will be carried out by police and firefighters from the Wokingham area as part of a multi-agency exercise for the Thames Valley region.

Exercise Wilbur is the second part of an exercise organised for the emergency services, local authorities and other emergency responders to practise their response, communications and co-ordination in the event of a major incident.

The first part took place in January.

The British Red Cross and Territorial Army have arranged for volunteers to simulate casualties to provide realism to the incident.

Andy Mancey, of Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service and the exercise director, said: “All emergency responders have a duty under the Civil Contingency Act to plan, train and exercise for major incidents.”

Details of where and what the major incident will be are being kept under wraps until it happens on Sunday.
