Youngsters line up for fundraiser

By Alice Murphy
31/ 3/2008

Pupils braved the rain to go conga-ing mad for Sport Relief .

The youngsters dressed in their favourite sports kits to raise funds for less fortunate children, and danced across the playground for the good cause.

Each pupil at The Hawthorns Primary in Northway, Woosehill, paid £1 to take part and dressed as sports stars including footballers, tennis players, swimmers and cheerleaders as they conga-ed for a mile.

Rain threatened to stop play, but the hardy children sang and danced their way around the playground regardless.

Deputy headteacher Brian Prebble, who organised the event with sports co-ordinator Andrew Milne, said: “There have been penalty shoot-outs, tap-dancing sessions and a range of events all week.

“We waited until Sport Relief had been on TV before we did this so they knew what it was all about.”

The school taught the pupils about the kind of projects Sport Relief supports, including homeless children in Brazil.

Mr Prebble said: “The kids understand that they are very lucky and by giving 50p or £1 they can change the lives of others.”
