Town voted least British in the UK

By Hugh Fort
March 26, 2008

The image of Wokingham as a quaint English market town oozing charm has been shattered after it was crowned the country’s least British place.

Despite being named the best place to live in the country, a poll by website locallife.co.uk has revealed the town has the least amount of British businesses and attractions of any town in the country.

Staff at the website compiled a list of features which make towns British, including pubs, fish and chip shops, tea rooms, theatres, stately homes, pet shops, Indian restaurants and cricket grounds.

To find out what the people of Wokingham think, view our video here.

This is nonsense. Wokingham has many wonderful pubs. But it is a little deficient in the sporting stakes, notably a rugby club.

Okay, so firstly it's fallacious to measure "Britishness" by the number of "pubs, fish and chip shops, tea rooms, theatres, stately homes, pet shops, Indian restaurants and cricket grounds".

Secondly, Wokingham has more than its fair share of pubs and Indian restaurants.

Thirdly, what is "Britishness" anyway?

Fourthly, why does it matter?
