Watchdog calls for Wokingham Post Office closures to be scrapped

February 19, 2008

An independent watchdog has called for the Post Office to rethink plans to close two of its Wokingham branches.

Postwatch has scrutinised each of the proposals and called for Post Office to scrap plans to close the London Road and Barkham Road Post Offices.

The two branches are included in a list of six Post Offices in the West Berkshire and Wiltshire plan which Postwatch wants to save.

Post Office has proposed 36 branches for closure in the region.

A statement from Postwatch reads: “Postwatch does not have the power to veto Post Office Ltd’s proposals.

“Additionally if the closure does not go ahead, Post Office Ltd may propose an alternative branch in the area to close.

“Postwatch expects Post Office Ltd to go ahead with the other closure proposals and understands that the date the closures will start is from April 1.”
