Unanimous ‘no’ to new gateway plans

27/ 6/2007

Key Wokingham groups have blasted designs that could see a hotel, amphitheatre, eco-homes, organic supermarket or a cinema in the town centre.
Developers’ aspirations for the regeneration of the Elms Field area, including Wellington House and Paddocks car park, were unveiled for public scrutiny at Wokingham Borough Council’s civic offices yesterday (Tuesday).
But The Wokingham Society, Wokingham Town Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG) and Wokingham History Group have criticised the designs.
Donald Macdonald, president of The Wokingham Society, said: “The overall impression is if you take a little bit of grass and then put up tall buildings at the back of the area, it gives the impression of tall buildings, it doesn’t give  the impression of green space.
