A multi-million pound project to breathe new life into  Wokingham’s town centre has been postponed until next year.

Traders in the town have reacted with little surprise to the news, but many say the situation for their business is “desperate”, with trade in the town at an all time low.

Tuesday’s announcement by Rock Investment Group – the company behind the £80 million project – means building work to revamp Peach Street will not start until 2008 at the earliest and leaves traders facing an uncertain future.

While some business owners are eagerly anticipating the revamp as a way of drawing shoppers in to the town, others could lose their livelilhoods if the rebuild goes ahead.
