Thousands to have their needs tested

By Victoria Corbett

Nearly 3,000 disabled, elderly and learning disabled people in the district will have the home care they receive reassessed.

Following a public consultation into a shake-up of adult social care services, Wokingham District Council’s executive agreed on Thursday to support changes to the eligibility criteria so only those with ‘critical’ needs will continue to have care workers visit them at home.

Those with ‘substantial’ and ‘moderate’ needs will no longer receive social care services from the council and must find alternative care from voluntary organisations in the district.

The council says it has been forced to make the decision due to the growing ageing population and the number of people with complex medical problems.
