Ryeish Green gets a last minute reprieve

By Natalie Slater

Embattled Ryeish Green School was given an 11th-hour lifeline on Thursday after council chiefs announced they would carry out more consultation over its proposed closure.

Stunned placard-wielding campaigners vowed to fight on after Wokingham District Council said it could not make a decision on the school’s closure yet but would launch another six-week consultation.

Parents, teachers and governors hoping to save the school went along to the council’s executive meeting on Thursday expecting the axe to fall and a decision to be made to shut the school in 2010.

But all 10 committee members agreed that the consultation needed to be done again to examine issues that had arisen during the six-week consultation that ended in January.
