A football club’s campaign to relocate to a 250-seat stand at Cantley Park has gone into extra time.
Wokingham District Council’s Conservative executive committee had agreed to support the relocation of Wokingham and Emmbrook Football Club at a meeting last Thursday.
But Wokingham Liberal Democrats have called in the decision to the council’s scrutiny committee – delaying the committee’s ruling and holding up any planning application submitted by the club.
Campaigners against the development had relentlessly grilled council leader Cllr Frank Browne in the public question time at the executive meeting.
But their fears were put to one side as councillors unanimously decided developing Cantley Park as a facility for sporting excellence was a priority.
Under the proposals, Wokingham and Emmbrook FC would move to a £261,000 ground in Twyford Road. A licensed clubhouse would be based at the Ashridge Rooms.
Protestors from Save Cantley Park Action Group (SCPAG) and representatives from Cantley House Hotel and Wokingham Theatre outlined their mutual fears a football stand
would bring noise, anti-social parking and disruption to Cantley Park.
