Victorian villa flats plan will destroy town's heritage - claim

3/ 1/2007

Plans to knock down a Victorian villa in a conservation area and build 12 flats have left Wokingham residents “appalled”.
Developer Chesil Properties Ltd has submitted a plan to demolish 6 Langborough Road and replace it with eight two bedroom and four one bedroom flats with parking and access.
The historical building features in the council’s conservation area booklet, highlighting the need to “protect their architectural and historical importance” of the town.
And yet if planning and conservation area consent are granted, the large villa that dominates the library end of the road could be lost.
The building was previously owned by Wokingham District Council, but was sold in April 2005.
Langborough Road residents Robin and Jane Cops were disgusted by the news that the building could be demolished.
Mrs Cops said: “We are appalled. I can’t understand that they [Wokingham District Council] boast about their Victorian conservation area and then propose to knock down one of the biggest houses in the road.
“It’s a beautiful house. It shouldn’t have been sold to an individual. It’s got huge potential. We couldn’t believe it was empty.”
