Dozens hit by fines in free parking confusion

By Victoria Corbett

Dozens of shoppers were handed £70 fines when confusion arose about free festive parking in the run up to Christmas.
The fines were slapped on cars in the main Denmark Street car park after drivers mistakenly thought the spaces were a festive free for all.
They had in fact parked in a Euro Car Parks area – run independently to Wokingham District Council car parks,   which were free on Saturday, December 9, 16 and 23.
Several angry residents have called The Wokingham Times, including Katherine Parker whose daughter was fined.
Having seen the story in The Wokingham Times informing shoppers of the free parking in council-owned car parks, she assumed this included the private car park operated by Euro Car Parks.
And, thinking she was doing people a favour, she told other Saturday shoppers not to bother paying either, as it was free all day.
A costly surprise awaited all the shoppers when they returned and found parking tickets for £70 on their cars.
