BACKGROUND CHECKS TO BE CARRIED OUT ON SCHOOL STAFF

By Alana Razzell
April 05, 2006

HUNDREDS of Wokingham school staff will have their backgrounds looked into by an agency that aims to keep perverts out of the classroom.
The district council will pay half the cost of the retrospective Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) checks (about £60,000) for more than 1,500 teachers and school staff.
The rest of the money must come from the schools, Wokingham District Council has ruled this week.
It was revealed by The Wokingham Times in February that the district council estimated 870 teachers and 975 support staff, including classroom assistants and dinner ladies, had not been subjected to stringent checks by the CRB.
