Protest today at White House School
March 14, 2013
Hundreds of people are expected to protest outside the White House School today in a bid to save it from development.
Parents from around the Evendons area have formed the Save The White House School Project and launched a petition to protect the Victorian buildings from housing development and to create a school and community centre.
The group has also suggested Wokingham Borough Council buy the site for the community.
The site, in Finchampstead Road, is up for sale after trustees of Holme Grange School, who have been responsible for the future of the White House School Foundation since the school’s closure last July, deemed the buildings no longer fit for educational use.
Around 120 people are expected to protest outside the former school at around 1pm.
Ian Sheppard, a member of the Save The White House School Project, said: “There is a feeling that we need to bring a sense of community back to this area as we don’t have a community facility.
“Ideally the group would like to see it back as a school and community centre. Nobody wants it to be developed into housing and flats.
“There needs to be a community focal point for the area and we want Wokingham Borough Council to consider buying the site as a community asset.”
Trustees of Holme Grange School put the site up for sale with Haslams last month.
Mr Sheppard continued: “The buildings were fit for educational purposes up until when the school closed and it was never condemned. It has got some new sections and part of it is currently used by the church so it’s not decrepit.”
Members of the project would like to see a community facility similar to the FBC Centre in Finchampstead, which is a church and community centre next to a school.
Mr Sheppard added: “Anyone living south of Evendons Lane has got no chance of getting their child into their preferred school and people don’t want development on the site but would be happy to have a school and a community asset.”
