Deadline for comments on new primary school plans looms

By Jon Nurse

The deadline is looming to comment on plans for three new primary schools across the borough.

Parents and residents have until Monday to share their thoughts on the planning application for the site in East Park Farm, Charvil, and Tuesday to comment on designs for schools in Smith’s Walk in Woosehill and Winnersh Farm.

It will be at least another month before the council announces who will run the Woosehill and Winnersh schools, with time counting down towards the September opening.

Expressions of interest are being sought from education providers until Wednesday, March 20, to run the sites as academies or free schools.

The council is attempting to create an additional 150 school places per year at six school locations in the south west of the borough.

Applications submitted by the council are for single entry primary schools in Charvil, Winnersh and Woosehill, with single storey buildings holding six classrooms, a reception class, food science room, library and hall.

The remaining places will be created at Shinfield Infants and Junior School and Grazeley Parochial School.

Dozens of comments and objections have been submitted on the applications, which can be found at www.wokingham.gov.uk/planning.

Councillor Charlotte Haitham Taylor, executive member for children’s services, said: “The planning applications and invitations for expressions of interest are key milestones in our plans to provide the additional primary places which are needed for this September.

“We hope they receive planning approval in the spring.”

In December The Piggott School revealed it would run the Charvil school, subject to approval by the Secretary of State for Education.

n The community has an opportunity to pose questions on plans for the Winnersh school at a consultation session from 7pm to 9pm at The Forest School in Robin Hood Lane on Monday.

Interested parties are advised to confirm their attendance by messaging admissions.review@wokingham.gov.uk or calling (0118) 974 6105.

Does seem a little short notice.

Am I alone in wanting to live in a country where education is provided by the state - rather than the state, and schools, and trusts, and directorships, and "education providers" (whatever they are - private companies?)? Shouldn't there be 1 school for every X children, in every area of the country, provided, funded, regulated and staffed by the state?

Why over-complicate these things (schools, hospitals, police forces)? the only reason I can think of is that it gives the politicians of the day ten layers of beurocracy and other people/companies to blame when things go wrong.
