TV adventurer Bear Grylls tried out a school’s outdoor learning hub, which aims to improve pupils teamwork, leadership and communication skills.

The Man vs Wild star swung by Holme Grange School in Heathlands Road to open the school’s TLC Hub (Teamwork, Leadership and Communication) and the newly-extended Little Grange nursery.

Excited pupils and parents joined the Chief Scout in exploring the outdoor area designed to host group challenges. Bear said: “Outdoor learning gives kids so much – a pride and a confidence. It’s a good chance to learn how to work together and all kids love getting muddy. It’s a total pleasure to come and help open this.”

Russell Shepherd, director of sport, added: “We have big plans for this area and are hoping over the course of the next academic year and beyond to roll out an award scheme across the school.

“The area will also be utilised in PE as well as through cross-curricular links in all subjects across the school, from music to mathematics.”

Earlier, enthusiastic children sang for the adventurer as he opened the nursery’s extension.
