Staff and parents at the borough’s first free school are planning fundraising activities as the first term looms closer.
West of Wokingham Parent Group (WoWPG) is due to open to Year Seven children in September and expects a funding agreement from the Government next week so it can confirm all places.
The new Oakbank School will open on the site of the former Ryeish Green School in Spencers Wood.
The group, which has been backed by education trust CfBT, is looking to raise funds for the school and headteacher Nick Dorey will be doing his bit in the summer when he takes on a sponsored bike ride through the Alps.
Mr Dorey said: “At the beginning of August I will be spending six days completing a solo 700km bike ride across the Alps from Lake Geneva to Nice.
“The route will take in many of the famous Tour de France cols and will involve climbing twice the height of Mount Everest over the six days.
“The money raised will go towards fitness equipment for Oakbank so that we can further diversify our PE and activities programme and even, maybe, help to identify and develop a future Tour de France winner!
“I spent the first week in June in training in the Alps, but am definitely daunted by the challenge.
“Any support would be much appreciated!”
In October, three members of WoWPG, Sarah Codling, Louise de la Riviere and Madeleine Young, will run the Windsor Great Park Half Marathon for sponsorship.
They hope to raise funds to extend the music resources at Oakbank.
The school held a transition day on Wednesday, June 13, at St Mary’s Junior School in Shinfield for prospective Oakbank pupils.
Another day will be held on Wednesday, July 4, at Reading Town Hall.
The school will host a ‘meet the tutors’ evening at The Coombes School in Arborfield on Tuesday, July 3, from 6.30pm.
This is a chance for new pupils to get to know their tutor groups.
