An Olympic swimmer made a splash at six schools in Wokingham by showing off his gold medal from the 1980 Moscow Games to excited pupils.

Duncan Goodhew’s tour of schools in the borough included The Coombes Primary in Arborfield, where he opened the new swimming pool, on Monday, May 28.

Mr Goodhew also brought the Olympic torch he carried for London 2012 to show to children at the six schools, which also included Shinfield St Mary’s Junior, Infant and Nursery.

Children at the schools will enjoy a mini-Olympics event this month and enjoyed hearing about Mr Goodhew’s memories of the 1980 Games, when he was captain of the Great Britain swim team.

His talk culminated with the children having the opportunity to see and touch his gold medal for the 100m breaststroke, as well as the Olympic torch.

Clare Wagstaff, headteacher at Shinfield, said: “ This was a captivating experience for all our children and many felt motivated to persevere in their chosen sports.”
