Bracknell schools run their own Olmpic torch relay
May 28, 2012
Pupils gathered in the sunshine for the first day of Bracknell Forest’s Olympic torch relay for schools on Tuesday.
The torch started at Binfield Primary School, Benetfeld Road, and made its way via every school in the area to Bracknell Leisure Centre, where it arrived on Wednesday.
Councillor Mrs Emma Barnard, chairman of the governors at Warfield Primary School, said: “The atmosphere was superb as children gathered in each playground.
“There was a real sense of excitement that involved all the staff and pupils.”
Bracknell was filled with cheers and clapping as pupils from each school took a turn and carried the torch.
The mayor of Bracknell Forest, Councillor Jennie McCracken, kicked off the festivities by starting the relay alongside Sophie, of Year Three, who designed the relay mascot.
Cllr Dr Gareth Barnard, executive member for children, young people and learning, said: “It was an absolutely fantastic event and the enthusiasm of the children was great as they waved their flags.
“It was wonderful that secondary and primary schools all worked together.”
The event was organised by Bracknell Forest Council and the Bracknell Forest Schools Partnership.
