Illustrator makes his mark at Luckley-Oakfield School

March 19, 2012

A fascinating and funny mural was the result of a visit by a famous book illustrator to a girls’ school.

Artist Chris Fisher has illustrated more than 80 children’s books during his career, including titles by Michael Rosen and Vivian French.

During his visit to Luckley-Oakfield School in Wokingham on Monday, February 27, he invited students to suggest ideas for him to draw.

He then used each idea to build a story, resulting in the mural which included a skate-boarding turtle, a dog drinking Champagne and a cat dressed as an Elvis impersonator.

Headteacher Vivienne Davis said “The session demonstrated how important illustrations can be to a book and how a story can actually be told by illustrations alone.

"Mr Fisher clearly loves his work and conveys great enthusiasm, which really rubbed off on the girls and staff who took part in the sessions.”

Mr Fisher is currently working with author Vivian French to produce a new series of books.
