MP sees Waingels College progress

March 17, 2010

Rob Wilson got to join construction workers at Waingels College as he was shown around the £31.5 million re-development.

The MP for Reading East was taken on a tour around the Woodley secondary, in Denmark Avenue, on Tuesday last week by headteacher Richard Green, deputy head Stewart Alexander and Mark Tant of Wilmott Dixon.

The new buildings are being built from solid timber panels from sustainably managed forests, which arrived ready-made from Switzerland.

For every tree felled for the panels, a dozen trees are planted to ensure the forest survives.

This is the first time a secondary school in the country is being built using solid timber panels.

The new buildings will increase efficiency as they will reduce carbon emissions by 60 per cent and around 76 per cent of the waste created from this project will be recycled.

The construction process is helped as all panels arrived with doors and window openings cut into them.

Mr Wilson said: “The new buildings look fantastic and I am sure the staff and students will be extremely proud of the final result.

“You can certainly sense the excitement this project has brought to the school and I am delighted many of my constituents will be able to benefit from a first-class educational facility.”
