Keep an eye on the weather with Maiden Erlegh website

March 12, 2010

A weather website designed with help from a Maiden Erlegh pupil has pulled in nearly 4,000 hits in its first month online

Nabilah Loyes, who is in Year Eight, designed the logo for Maiden Erlegh’s weather station, which was launched in 2009 after the school received funding through the Science, Technology Engineering and Maths network (STEMNET).

The weather station will be used across the curriculum from aiding pupils in geography classes to after-school weather club projects in maths, science and ICT.

In addition, the school says the local community will benefit greatly since graphs are automatically generated on the Maiden Erlegh website showing forecasts for local weather.

The site uses advanced software, which is able to get forecasts within one or two degrees more accurate than other national forecasting organisations.

The weather station has been located on the roof of the building and automatically sends live data every 2.5 seconds to the school website.

It allows the accurate measurement of temperature, rainfall, humidity, wind speed and wind direction.

The station even managed to record the temperature plummeting to minus 6.8 degrees Celsius during the cold snap earlier this year.

Web users can access a range of weather-related resources through the site, including links to other websites, a weather picture of the day and graphs and archived data.

Joel Teskey, from Year Eight, said the school’s weather club will next be trying their hands at predicting the weather after much deliberation and analysis.

To access the live data and localised Lower Earley forecast, click on the weather station logo on the school’s homepage.

you can actually view a still screen of each the rotating pages - click the links on the left menu (it says that above the rotating screen)

for example "M.E. live data" is the current data

Excellent website! I have been using it since launch and found it to be much more accurate then the forecasts from even the MET office. Well Done.

Quite an impressive site! One suggestion though. Rather than the screen changing every few seconds, maybe have a navigator that you can select each view? Apart from that, very well done.
